Report on Cyber Security and Nirbhaya Squad awareness campaign
Cyber Security is one of the burning issues today and to make students aware of it. Ms.Sanjeevni Kumbhare Women PSI was invited as the speaker for the cyber security awareness campaign and for providing details of the Nirbhaya squad. This campaign was to make students aware of Cyber threats, Ethical hacking, how to be secured on the internet, and startup in Cyber Security. This session aimed to exchange experiences and expertise on cyber security awareness by discussing the different awareness campaign projects, materials, and toolkits. She emphasized the need for cybersecurity awareness and skills which is becoming increasingly urgent due to our dependence on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) across all aspects of our society. Recent technological advances and the introduction of smart devices have forced both government and private organizations to create awareness of cyber threats and cybersecurity. With a lack of appropriate guidelines, training, and cybersecurity awareness, adapting to such a ‘digital by default’ normal is difficult, and remote workers may inadvertently act in ways that expose the business to cyber threats. Frequently reported examples of these kinds of mistakes are connecting work devices to public Wi-Fi networks, sharing corporate devices with family members without authorization, connecting work devices to personal equipment without permission and using personal devices to access work applications, and downloading unauthorized applications contrary to organizational policies. All such frequent habits increase the risk of data exposure.
The further session followed by informing the students about the Nirbhaya Squad, which is comprised of trained women police officials. As a part of an awareness program on women’s safety Oshiwara police station carried out a sensitization drive explaining the role of the Nirbhaya squad and how women can reach out to them in times of crisis. The idea was to create awareness of various crimes against women and sexual harassment of any sort either physical, verbal, or cyber. For this Mumbai Police has been diligently taking constructive steps to create awareness about the Nirbhaya Squad by creating WhatsApp groups, going to schools and colleges, and even giving their personal contact numbers. She added that the police could do more to make a complainant feel safe and comfortable. She suggested, however, that women be aware of their environment and keep their personal contacts informed of their whereabouts, learn basic self-defense, and have an emergency call button. She further added that Mumbai is safer as compared to other cities and that the Mumbai police have created a vibe that women feel safe. However, police can create more awareness and approach educational institutions.
The session ended with a Q&A and a brief discussion among speakers and participants addressing some of the challenges and needs of awareness at present. The seminar ended full of Information and a vision of being safe and secure in the virtual world.
