Reduce Your Foodprints
THINK EAT and SAVE – Reduce Your Foodprints
The new incumbents (batch 2013-2015) at HKIMSR have launched mass awareness campaign on SAVING FOOD in the schools, colleges, restaurants and food courts in Mumbai on theWorld Environment Day, June 05, 2013. ‘Think, Eat and Save’ is the campaign that has been initiated by Aghaaz, the CSR initiative at HKIMSR in association with UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) and SOSVA (Society for Service to Voluntary Agencies). The campaign is meant to create awareness on saving food among the children and youths in schools, colleges and food courts. The aim behind keeping this theme for the special day is to discourage wastage of food and encourage people to reduce their food prints. The campaign is aimed at persuading people to think before eating and hence contributing in saving the environment.
Given this enormous imbalance in lifestyle and the resultant devastating effects on environment, this year’s theme-Reduce your food print-encourages becoming more aware of the environmental impact of the food of the choices make and empowers to make
informed decisions.
As per the experts one-third of the global food production is either wasted or lost. Food waste is an enormous drain of natural resources and hence a contributor to negative environmental impacts. Food waste primarily revolves around any form of food, raw or cooked, used or unused – discarded or intended so.
One way of dealing with food waste is to reduce its creation. This attitude has been promoted by Students of HKIMSR of not wasting food and this campaign includes Skit play on food wastage, inspirational videos and few games held in various Schools/Colleges/food courts by the students which would create awareness among young minds. The Students of HKIMSR will also provide important message on how to prevent the food from being wasted. Another deployment of strategy is to give training to the various employees of food court and restaurants about keeping separate bin for re-usable leftovers, so that leftover food can be collected by NGOs and helping several poor people for their needs. This year’s campaign would witness the power of collective decisions that is being made to reduce food waste, save money, minimize the environmental impact of food production and its wastage.
